About the CUD Scale
The CUD Scale was created by Wilder Nutting-Heath and Adam Davis over two consecutive road trips to Montana, during which they sampled more than 80 beers looking for the eight beers they would bring back in growlers for parties at KISS Cafe in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Washington.
Over the course of these trips, Wilder and Adam discovered that they needed a way to share their thoughts about the beers without worrying about trying to be objective. Beer drinking is fundamentally subjective, and they needed a way to talk about the three most important aspects of the beer they were drinking: how well they thought the beer was made, whether it was unique, and whether they would want to drink it again.
Over many conversations over many beers, the scales were finalized and the ritual of “cudding” beer was created. It has now been shared with the Ballard Drinking Team at KISS Cafe, around the country, and around the world.
This book was finally created by Adam Davis to commemorate Wilder Nutting-Heath’s bachelor trip return to Bozeman, Montana, the birthplace of the CUD Scale and the home of the cows that inspired us to slow down and spend a little more time ruminating.
